We are a house full of bookworms! Skip has always wanted built ins with a library full of books. When we first moved in, we installed these ikea hack bookshelves. They were great for about a year until they started to sag from the weight of all that we stored on them.So when the subject of switching our our Ikea hack bookcases for built ins came up… there was a resounding YEEEEESSS!!
Building from Stock Cabinets
Our initial thought was that this project would be a simple weekend project. Just some cabinet bases and throw up some shelves. But as we got into we realized how much detail we actually wanted to put into them. Our actual time spent on these was about 4 weekends. 🙂 We started with these stock kitchen cabinets.
Then Skip started building the tops. He made the frames first then just slowly cut and added in everything in from there. Sorry to say that there was no real method to his madness other than to draw it out, measure it and put it together.
We decided to add some details to the front of the doors with pieces of molding. We used small pieces of trim to get the centering just right. A little bit of wood glue and look how much it added to the plain cabinet doors!
Paint, Paint, Paint
Now it was time for paint! And paint we did. Into all hours of the night…something hard to do in a room with only three small lamps!!! P.S. We don’t recommend painting in the dark!!!
After some debate as to whether we should go dark or neutral we landed on Ultra White by Valspar in a semi-gloss. It is the perfect touch with the other chalk painted pieces that we have in the room and maintains the light and airy feel of the space. Paint, Paint, Paint…. And then Paint some more!!!!
The inside of the stock cabinets did not come with interior shelves. We used simple pieces of plywood covered in this drawer lining to make it look seamless.
Beautiful Built Ins
And here’s the final look (after styling of course)!!! Pops of color abound! We love it! We just can’t get enough of them!!!
